The river is my friend

She answers when I call

Moves her hips to my name

And lays an ear to my feet as I pray

The river is my friend

I name every poem after her

I paint every phrase in her likeness

So she feed my eyes with beauty each day

I have never met anyone as abundant as she

A physique shyly waiting on a bed of stones

For my voice to always call in her name

Her belly, a continent for all the things I am

I call and she answers

I dry her tears with my poems

I give her jewels to conserve

She and I share a vein

The river is my friend

She named her children after me

Each, a mainland for all the things I breathe

Hushed in her mighty but drowns in my name

Her heart beating for a lover she’s never met

I ask if it is the skies and she smiles

The river is my friend

She reminds me of a love I know

That gives and gives and gives and gives

That flows and flows and flows and flows

That listens to my heartstrings as they please

With the kind of love that runs as deep as she.
